Municipal elections in Azerbaijan started on 23 January. Voting at the polling stations began at 08:00 and will end at 19:00.
According to the CEC, 4,819,382 voters vote at 5,015 polling stations.
Elections are held on 118 constituencies. The ballots include 37,077 candidates. Following the elections, 15,035 members will be elected to 1,607 municipalities.
13,907 candidates run for eight political parties, 23,061 run in private, 109 candidates are nominated by initiative groups and 18,284 candidates are nonpartisan. In total, the candidates include representatives of 30 political parties.
Webcams have been installed in 1,000 polling stations.
Municipal elections are monitored by 50,551 local observers. Most of them are members of the ruling party New Azerbaijan.
International bodies, including the Council of Europe, ignored the invitation of the authorities to monitor the elections. -03B04-
