Russia to Deploy Border Guards on Border of Armenia, Azerbaijan
Lavrov, Shoigu to Visit Yerevan, Baku
Baku / 21.11.20 / Turan: On the border of Armenia and Azerbaijan, the number of Russian border guards will increase to maintain a peaceful situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. This was stated by the director of the FSB of Russia Alexander Bortnikov at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on November 20.
“At the request of the Armenian side, the border department of the FSB in the Republic of Armenia has allocated an additional reserve in the amount of 188 servicemen and the required amount of equipment,” he said. According to him, the border guards will deploy additional forces in the settlements of Teh (Goris region) and Sygyr (border with Iran). Earlier, two new posts were installed on the border of the Ararat region of Armenia and Nakhchivan (Yeraskh and Paruyr Sevak). Azerbaijan was informed, Bortnikov noted. An additional reserve was transferred to Armenia from November 18 to November 20. From November 22, they will start serving at the border, the FSB head said.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to Putin that the deployment of the Russian peacekeeping contingent in Karabakh had ended - 1,960 people and 552 pieces of equipment were delivered to the region.
In turn, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov announced attempts to disrupt the peace agreement on Karabakh, which causes concern.
According to him, there were attempts in Nagorno-Karabakh to obstruct the activities of Russian peacekeepers sent to the region within the framework of the ceasefire agreement.
“Unfortunately, there is a tendency, we feel it, which is aimed at trying to slow down the implementation of the statement of the Presidents of Russia and Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister of Armenia of November 9, and not to allow this statement to take place completely,” Lavrov said.
Shoigu and Lavrov arrived in Yerevan today to discuss the situation in the region and implement the ceasefire agreement. They will hold a meeting with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. From Yerevan they will fly to Baku for consultations with Ilham Aliyev, Russian media reported. -02D-
