Samvel Shahramanyan is new leader of Karabakh separatists
Baku/09.09.23/Turan: On September 9, the "parliament" of Karabakh elected Samvel Shahramanyan as new "president" instead of Araik Harutyunyan, who resigned a week ago.
The former commander of the Karabakh forces, Samvel Babayan, who also applied for the post of "president", actively campaigned against the election of Shahramanyan. However, his candidacy did not find support from the local elite. Samvel Babayan is considered an insincere and adventurous person. Besides, the Armenian public has suspicions that he maintains unofficial contacts with Baku.
As for Samvel Shahramanyan (1978), he previously held the positions of head of the "Karabakh security service", "youth minister" and "state minister".
Note that Shahramanyan headed the delegation of Karabakh Armenians at the talks with representatives of Baku, which took place on March 1 this year in Khojaly on the base of Russian peacekeepers. -02-
