Sergey Lavrov on Phased Plan, Peacekeepers in Karabakh, Role of Turkey
Moscow / 14.10.20 / Turan: A political settlement in Nagorno-Karabakh should go parallel with the implementation of existing agreements. This was stated in an interview with Russian media by the head of the country's Foreign Ministry Sergei Lavrov.
"The proposals that the co-chairs have worked through and continue to work through remain on the negotiating table. Their content is already known. This is a phased, gradual liberation of the regions around Karabakh, while observing the security guarantees of Karabakh and ensuring reliable communication between Karabakh and Armenia before the final status of Karabakh is determined," he said.
The sad events of recent times should help intensify this political process, Lavrov said.
According to him, peacekeepers should be brought into Nagorno-Karabakh to control the maintenance of the ceasefire.
"At the first stage, in addition to the liberation of two regions, all communications, economic ties and transport contacts would be unblocked and peacekeepers would be deployed to ensure that hostilities would not resume," Lavrov said.
Commenting on Turkey's position in this conflict, Lavrov said that Russia does not agree with Turkey's position on Karabakh and does not share Ankara's opinion on the possibility of a military solution to the conflict.
He also spoke for the necessity of meetings between the military leaderships of Azerbaijan and Armenia to implement the ceasefire regime. -02D-
