South Caucasus Media Conference
Baku / 20.11.20 / Turan: The 17th annual media conference on the South Caucasus on the topic “Freedom of the media and obtaining information for the stability of society: problems and prospects” was held, organized by the Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the two-day conference on November 18-19 was held online.
The forum consisted of two parts.
At the first plenary session, the issues of media freedom and access to information in a pandemic were discussed.
The second part was devoted to issues of freedom of expression and the state of media freedom in the region over the past year.
The conference was attended by representatives of the media community, experts, human rights defenders from Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia, as well as international experts.
Representatives of the three countries spoke about the problems and pressures faced by journalists in the context of the pandemic.
They put forward proposals by representatives of official structures. -16D-

In a move imbued with both spiritual and geopolitical undertones, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States of the Holy See, will arrive in Baku tomorrow for a highly anticipated visit. His return to the Azerbaijani capital marks his first visit since 2018, when he held meetings with then-Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, President Ilham Aliyev, and Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva. This visit, however, is more than a diplomatic call—it carries a deeper resonance in the evolving dynamics of Azerbaijan’s relations with the Vatican.

On December 12, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) delivered two rulings related to Azerbaijan. Both cases concerned violations of the right to private life, but the parties reached amicable settlements. The government will pay compensation to the applicants.

The Baku Court of Appeal on Friday considered complaints against the arrest of Meydan TV journalists. Thus, Nazim Musayev, lawyer of journalist Khayala Agayeva, asked the court to cancel the arrest decision or change the measure of restraint to house arrest. There is no primary evidence of Agayeva's involvement in ‘smuggling’.
