State Department: The U.S. is troubled by reports of the detention of Gozel Bayramli
"The United States is troubled by reports of the detention of Popular Front party deputy chairperson Gozel Bayramli," a State Department official said on Friday, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.
"We urge Azerbaijan to release not only Ms. Bayramli, but all those incarcerated for exercising their fundamental freedoms, including freedom of expression, and to open space for peaceful political participation," an official said in response to TURAN's request for comment.
Bayramli, one of the most outspoken opposition figures in Azerbaijan, has been arrested on suspicion of "smuggling money into the country" while returning from Georgia on Thursday, May 25.
Baku's Sabail District Court ruled last night that Bayramli should be held in pretrial detention for three months.
