Monitoring Center for Political Prisoners Demands Release of Gezal Bayramli

Baku / 27.05.17 / Turan: The Monitoring Center for Political Prisoners (MCPP) strongly condemned the arrest of the deputy chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), Gezal Bayramli, and demanded her immediate release.

As MCPP noted in the statement, the detention of Bayramli at the border checkpoint in the Gazakh region at the entrance from Georgia on May 25 passed without observing the legal norms of the European Convention on Human Rights.

The detainee was not given the opportunity to contact a lawyer, and her mobile phone was taken away. In addition, video surveillance is not provided as proof of the charge.

According to Elshan Hasanov, head of MCPP, thereby the provisions of Article 5 of the European Convention on "the right to freedom and personal inviolability" and "the right to defend oneself in person or through the defender chosen by him" were violated in respect of Bayramli.

"Gezal Bayramli, an activist of the Popular Front Party, published critical articles against corrupt officials, and recently she was summoned to the law-enforcement bodies and the prosecutor's office. We believe the arrest of Bayramli is related to her political activities," Hasanov said.

He stressed that recently the opposition party of the Popular Front has been under systematic pressure by the authorities.

So in the list of political prisoners there are eight members of the Popular Front Party, including Seymour Hazi, Asif Yusifli, Mammad Ibrahim, Fuad Gahramanli, Fuad Ahmadli, Faig Amirov, Elnur Farajov and Murad Adilov.

"Given the dependence of the judiciary system on the authorities, we doubt a fair trial and demand the immediate release of Gezal Bayramli," Hasanov said.

On the night of May 27, the Sabail court chose a preventive measure in the form of arrest for a period of three months for Bayramli. She is charged under article 206.1 (smuggling) and she faces up to five years in prison.

* Bayramli rejected the accusation and declared the political nature of the case.

** MCPP was established by a group of former "prisoners of conscience" in October 2014. -06D--
