The Court of Appeal leaves Natig Jafarli in custody
On 17 august the Baku Court of Appeal considered a complaint on the decision to arrest the Executive Secretary of the REAL Movement Natig Jafarli. The court did not satisfy the complaint, said the lawyer Javad Javadov. The Court also rejected the defense motion to terminate the criminal proceedings and change the measure of restraint on house arrest. In turn, Jafarli denied the Attorney General report that he allegedly confessed. Jafarli said that he did not give testimony to the investigation. On 15 August the General Prosecutor's Office said that Jafarli, together with the now convicted leader of the REAL Ilgar Mammadov received a grant from the US National Democratic Institute, and used them without proper registration. Jafarli was arrested on 12 August on charges of illegal entrepreneurship and abuse of office. Jafarli and REAL Movement call the accusations politically motivated.-06D-
