The hunger strike of Azerbaijani activists arrested in Iran
For 12 days, five activists of the Movement of Southern Azerbaijan National Awakening (MNESA) are on a hunger strike in protest against unjust sentences of the Iranian court.
The are not provided with medical care, and the higher court refuses to reconsider their case.
The convicts were not provided with a lawyer, they are not allowed to meet with their family, reads the appeal of World Azerbaijanis Congress (WAC) to international organizations and the world community.
Five activists of MNESA: Latif Hasani, Ayat Mehralibeyli, Shahram Radmehr, Mahmoud Fazli and Behbud Guluzadeh demanded to ensure the right of Azerbaijanis to study in their native language.
They were arrested in December 2012 - January 2013, and Tabriz Revolutionary Court sentenced them to a total of 45 years in prison.
The decision was approved by the Court of Appeal of Eastern Azerbaijan province of Iran.
The health of some of the protesters has deteriorated in recent days and they may die.
The WAC called on the international community not to remain indifferent to the fate of Azerbaijani activists, and to demand from the Iranian authorities to stop repression. -03D06-
