The reaction of Armenia and Karabakh to the meeting in Brussels raises questions
Baku/15.05.23 /Turan: A day after the trilateral meeting of the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Brussels with the participation of the head of the European Council Charles Michel, official Yerevan has not made its assessments. As you know, Baku welcomed the results of the meeting set out in Charles Michel's statement.
Deputy Foreign Minister Paruyr Hovhannisyan's comments were made from Yerevan.
Asked whether the issue of the return of its enclaves to Azerbaijan was raised in Brussels, Hovhannisyan said that he had not heard of any discussions on this matter, either in the past or now. At the same time, he believes that mutual recognition of territorial integrity "means the withdrawal of the Azerbaijani armed forces from the sovereign territory of Armenia."
As for the construction of roads within the framework of unblocking regional communications, Armenia should receive "clear guarantees" of the status of these communications.
"The roads that will pass through the territory of the republic as part of the unblocking of communications should be exclusively under the jurisdiction of Armenia. And only after receiving clear guarantees will it be possible to talk about the start of construction work," Hovhannisyan said.
In turn, the head of the parliamentary commission on defense and security, the deputy from the party of power "Civil Contract" Andranik Kocharyan believes that it is not necessary to make hasty conclusions about the Brussels meeting.
Can we assume that Armenia does not recognize Nagorno-Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan? To this question, Kocharyan replied that negotiations are still underway and when the strategy is published, it will be possible to talk about something. At the same time, he said that "Armenia recognized the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan in all negotiations, but Nagorno-Karabakh has its own territory and status. Today, Nagorno-Karabakh is probably the most independent state and will remain so in the next 3-4 years," he said.
To the remark that the Armenian authorities do not raise the issue of self-determination of Nagorno-Karabakh, Kocharyan said: "The people of Nagorno-Karabakh have not raised any other issue besides this." According to him, Nagorno-Karabakh has built its life "based on the standards announced by him," Sputnik Armenai quotes Kocharyan.
The former "Foreign Minister of Karabakh" David Babayan spoke more sharply, calling the Brussels meeting "the Munich agreement of 1938." "Michel wants to drive us into a concentration camp?" He demanded explanations and refutations from official Yerevan that Armenia agreed with Michel's proposals.
Babayan accused the West of betraying the Armenians and called on Russia to fulfill its role as the guarantor of the security of the Armenians of Karabakh in accordance with the trilateral statement of November 10, 2020. According to him, the Armenians of Karabakh will not live under the jurisdiction of Azerbaijan.
"Now there are two options left: a fight to the end or a biblical outcome to preserve the gene pool, as the Jews once did after leaving Egypt," he concluded.
If we sum up all these statements, we can say that the Armenian society is not ready for the end of the conflict with Azerbaijan. ---02D---
