Troll network intensifies in Azerbaijan - the Guardian
Baku/14.04.21/Turan: The British newspaper The Guardian on the activation of trolls supported by the Azerbaijani authorities campaigning against independent news agencies and opposition politicians. This happened six months after Facebook's ban on trolls.
In October 2020, 8,000 Facebook and Instagram accounts and pages associated with the ruling New Azerbaijan Party were deleted for “coordinated falsified behavior”.
Russia used similar troll operations to interfere with the 2016 U.S. elections. Thus, an analysis carried out on the account of the independent resource Azad Soz, which became the target of troll attacks, revealed 301 comments written from fake pages.
In addition to Azad Söz, the trolls are targeting the pages of the Azadlıq newspaper, the Azerbaijani service of Radio Liberty, the online media Mikroskop Media, as well as opposition politicians, including the leader of the Popular Front Party, Ali Karimli.
He believes that the Azerbaijani authorities copied the practice of creating a troll factory from Russia. According to Karimli, there are about 10 thousand "regular" trolls in the service of the ruling regime.
They operate among the youth organization of the New Azerbaijan Party, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and pro-government non-governmental organizations. The authorities are trying to form an opinion about the support of their citizens. To do this, use means such as "likes", "comments", "reposts", etc.
Blogger Mehman Huseynov, who spent two years in prison for anti-corruption investigations, said that trolls often make false complaints to Facebok, which leads to the blocking of the accounts of journalists and bloggers.
“We cannot fight them. The only thing we can do is blocking ... However, it takes a lot of time,” Huseynov said.
Difficulties in the fight against trolls are because Facebook has not translated all the tools and instructions into the Azerbaijani language, and this makes it difficult to file complaints and restore blocked pages.
The lack of control over the violation of the rules of use causes great harm, because this is the only platform for the self-expression of Internet users. –06D-
