Turkey and Israel may cooperate in gas supplies to Europe
Baku/04.02.22/Turan: Ankara is ready to use the gas produced by Israel in the Mediterranean, as well as deliver it to Europe, Turkish President Erdogan told journalists on Friday returning from a visit to Kiev. "Earlier, we have already discussed this topic with Israel. We use Israeli gas inside the country, and in addition, we will begin joint work on transportation to Europe," NTV quoted Erdogan as saying. He noted that he intends to discuss this issue during the upcoming visit to Ankara by Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog in March.
“I hope that during the visit of Mr. Herzog these topics will be on our agenda. In addition, we will talk about this with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett,” he said.
Earlier, Israel planned to export gas produced in the Eastern Mediterranean through the EastMed pipeline. However, he abandoned this idea, because the project did not pay off. Greece, Cyprus and Israel tried to implement this project to supply gas from the Israeli Leviathan field and the Cypriot Aphrodite field through the islands of Cyprus and Crete to Greece, and from there to Italy. The length of the gas pipeline was to be 1,900 km, of which 1,300 km was under water. However, earlier this year, the US notified Greece, Cyprus and Israel that it was not supporting the project for environmental and economic reasons.
Turkey is currently an important link in the Southern Gas Corridor and already has all the necessary infrastructure to transport gas to Europe from the vast region of the Middle East, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Caspian region. -02D-
