Unprecedented Security and Detention Measures in Sumgayit
Baku / 15.07.18 / Turan: Law enforcement bodies on Sunday adopted unprecedented security measures in Sumgayit with the aim of suppressing a possible protest action, which was called through social networks after the events in Gence on July 10.
The police and special forces completely blocked the passages to the square in front of the city administration. In the adjoining streets, several armored vehicles were seen.
Owners of cafes and shops were ordered to close their premises in order to avoid crowds. At the same time the police did not allow citizens to shoot what was happening and the armored vehicles by their mobile phones.
Raids were conducted to identify and detain "religious radicals" and "radical opposition supporters" who support them. According to law enforcement agencies, 18 people were detained.
Recall that on July 10 in Gence during clashes near the building of the city administration, two police officers were killed. The protests were motivated by discontent with the work of the head of the city, Elmar Veliyev, on whom an attempt was made on July 3.
According to the authorities, the riots were organized by religious radicals.
After that, in social networks through dubious accounts, appeals were sent to repeat similar actions in Sumgayit in protest against the activities of the city's leadership. -06D--
