U.S. Calls On Georgia To Uphold Fundamental Rights
Washington D.C./07.10.23/Turan: The United States on Friday reacted to Georgia's new amendments to restrict gathering and demonstrations.
"The United States remains a strong advocate of freedom of expression and the freedom of assembly. We call on Georgian authorities to uphold these fundamental rights," a State Department spokesperson told TURAN's Washington correspondent.
"Ensuring that all citizens – regardless of political affiliation - can make their voices heard is a key element in any healthy democracy and supports Georgia's aspirations towards Euro-Atlantic integration," the spokesperson added.
The Georgian parliament voted on Oct. 5 to effectively ban the use of tent camps during public protests. The move comes as the Georgian Dream government accused opposition groups of planning to topple the government with the help of the West.
