Rashad Ramazanov
Wife of convicted blogger reported deterioration of his health condition
Blogger Rashad Ramazanov, who is serving a prison sentence in colony number 15, complains of poor conditions and pressures on him. This was reported by his wife Kenul Ismayilova after visiting her husband.
‘Rashad was very tense and highly agitated. The colony treats convicts very badly. The food is of poor quality and very little time is allotted for meals, so prisoners do not have time to eat properly.
There is terrible unsanitary conditions in the kitchen, sanitary facilities and bathhouse. Hot water is provided once a week and for a short time. Food in the prison shop is very expensive,’ Ismayilova said.
She appealed to the Ombudsman and the Minister of Justice regarding this situation in colony number 15.
‘I have no job and no income to provide my husband with normal products in prison. Rashad's mother spends half of her pension so that her son can buy just bread in the colony,’ Ismayilova said.
* Rashad Ramazanov was detained on 20 May 2022 and the next day arrested for four months on charges under Article 234.4.3 (drug trafficking on a large scale) of the Criminal Code. He denied the charges and human rights activists recognised him as a political prisoner. In February 2024, the court sentenced him to 5 years and 4 months of imprisonment.
Earlier, in May 2013, Ramazanov was sentenced to 9 years of imprisonment on charges of drug trafficking on a large scale. He was pardoned in 2019.
Local human rights organisations said that the real reason for the arrest was criticism of the authorities' policy on religion on social media, recognising Ramazanov as a political prisoner.
