U.S. 'Welcomes' Extension Of EU Sanctions Against Russia
The Trump administration on Tuesday 'welcomed' the extension of EU sanctions against Russia for its war against Ukraine, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief, just a day after the block agreed a 6-month extension for a raft of sanctions aimed at depriving Moscow of funds to finance its war against Ukraine.
The pair discussed "ways to deepen U.S.-EU cooperation on common priorities," State Department's Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said in a readout of the call. "The Secretary welcomed the extension of EU sanctions against Russia for its war against Ukraine," she added.
Rubio "underscored the need to strengthen transatlantic security, called for Europe to increase defense spending, and highlighted the challenges posed by China," the spokesperson noted.
The EU sanctions against Russia target trade, finance, energy, technology, industry, transport and luxury goods. They include a ban on the import or transfer of seaborne crude oil and certain petroleum products from Russia to Europe. They will now remain in place at least until July 31.
