Will Serzh Sargsyan Become Special Envoy for Karabakh?
Baku / 06/27/18 / Turan: The adviser to the Prime Minister of Armenia Arsen Kharatyan speaking on the Public TV channel of Armenia stated that he does not rule out the possibility of the participation of the former President Serzh Sargsyan in the negotiations on the Karabakh settlement.
"In Armenia, unfortunately, there are few people who have information about the negotiation process. Serzh Sargsyan is one of them. Perhaps the day will come and Serzh Sargsyan will become a special envoy in the negotiation process on the Karabakh issue. I do not rule out the possibility of the participation of anyone in Armenia in the negotiations, based on the interests of Armenia, if there is a public consensus on this issue," Kharatyan said.
The advisor to the Prime Minister of Armenia also confirmed that the position of Armenia has not changed, and the Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan can only speak on behalf of Armenia at the talks.
Previously, the Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated his readiness to meet with Serzh Sargsyan only to discuss the Karabakh problem.
In the days following this announcement, there was no reaction from Sargsyan. However, a criminal case was instituted against one of his brothers on charges of fraud and tax evasion, and another of his brothers was detained on charges of possession of weapons, but released the next day.
It can be assumed that this was a reaction of the authorities to Serzh Sargsyan's refusal to become a party to the negotiations.
Official Baku did not react to the idea of returning Serzh Sargsyan to the negotiating table. -02D-
