Will the election of the chairman of the Supreme Court as the head of the Judicial-Legal Council strengthen the independence of the judiciary?
Baku/25.06.23/Turan: At the first meeting of the Judicial-Legal Council of Azerbaijan in a new composition on June 24, Chairman of the Supreme Court Inam Kerimov was elected its head.
At the meeting, the upcoming tasks to improve judicial activities were discussed and relevant proposals were put forward, the structure said in a statement.
Previously, the Judicial-Legal Council was headed by the Minister of Justice, that is, a representative of the executive branch.
According to observers, the election of the chairman of the Supreme Court as the head of the Judicial-Legal Council is formally a step aimed at strengthening the independence of the judiciary.
According to information from informed sources, the functions of the logistics of the courts will also be taken away from the Ministry of Justice. These powers are said to be transferred to the Judicial-Legal Council.—06B-
