Yerevan calls to recognize the independence of the former Nagorno-Karabakh
Baku/19.09.23/Turan: Protests erupted outside the Armenian government building in Yerevan shortly after reports emerged of the Azerbaijani army's commencement of a counter-terrorism operation in the former Nagorno-Karabakh region. Demonstrators obstructed all routes leading to Republic Square in the heart of Yerevan.
The protestors are demanding tangible action from Armenian authorities, foremost the recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh's independence and the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Periodic clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement officers have occurred during the protests, with participants vociferously chanting "Nikol is a traitor."
The discontent stems from dissatisfaction with Prime Minister Pashinyan's policies concerning Nagorno-Karabakh. Many believe that his actions have contributed to the region's isolation and a renewed escalation of tensions.
