Azerbaijan has the right to put forward territorial claims against Armenia - Tofig Zulfugarov
Baku/15.05.21/Turan: The acute reaction of the West to the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border will not have serious consequences, said Ex-Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Tofig Zulfugarov in an interview with Turan, commenting on the reaction of the US State Department and the President of France.
“If the international community wanted to exert pressure, it would do so when the Armenians occupied Karabakh and other territories of Azerbaijan. For 30 years they have also observed and made statements,” he said.
Currently, the process of defining the borders between the two countries is underway; it is inevitable after any war. For 30 years, Armenia, in full view of the whole world, seized and appropriated the lands of the neighboring country, calling it the restoration of historical justice. Then the world community made condemning statements and even four UN Security Council resolutions were adopted, but Armenia ignored them.
“Talking about historical justice, we have every right to present territorial claims to Armenia, because Zangezur and Goycha are the historical lands of Azerbaijan,” Zulfugarov said.
When asked how to explain that criticism comes from the West, not Russia, the ex-minister said that Russia is no less interested in the Zangezur corridor than Azerbaijan. For Moscow, cooperation and regional tandem with Turkey is more important than the "maintenance" of Armenia, the provision of endless military, political and economic assistance to it, Zulfugarov said.
He explained the sharp reaction to the processes of demarcation in Armenia itself by the pre-election situation, where the opposition is trying to dramatize the situation and use it against the Pashinyan government.
Pashinyan himself is also trying to maneuver between the West and Russia, trying to get the maximum of political and other support. If Armenia again tries to rely on the West, then its losses will only increase. “Russia will not defend Armenia; the geopolitical situation has changed radically. The only way out for Armenia is to put an end to the enmity with Turkey, to recognize the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, to renounce claims to Karabakh and not to interfere in the processes of the Armenian settlements on the territory of Azerbaijan.
Finally, Armenia must fulfill its obligations under the trilateral agreement and not hinder the opening of the Zangezur corridor,” Zulfugarov said.
Negative reactions from abroad are possible in the future. The period after the war can be considered a transitional period and during this period such "troubles" will periodically occur, Tofig Zulfugarov noted. -02В-
