A group of residents of the city of Sumgayit urged the court to release Elchin Mammad
Baku/20.07.20/Turan: A group of people appealed to the Sumgait City Court in the case of Elchin Mammaed, the head of the Legal Education of Sumgait Youth NGO. The appeal, signed by 30 persons, was addressed to the judge of the city court Parviz Hajiyev.
It is noted that Mammad, being a lawyer and human rights defender, provided them with legal assistance free of charge. His detention will leave the people he helped unprotected.
We believe that the judge, considering this case, will be guided by the principles of humanism and justice,” the appeal says.
Mammad was detained on March 30, several days after the publication of a critical report on the human rights situation in Azerbaijan.
On March 31, the court arrested him for 3 months on charges of theft. A complaint against Mammad was filed by a woman who had earlier slandered journalist Anar Mammadov. The arrested man himself denied the charges.
Local human rights defenders. International human rights organization Amnesty International also condemned the arrest of the human rights defender. –06D-
