Agali Yahyaev tortured after detention - spouse
Baku/04.09.23/Turan: Muslim Unity Movement (MUM) board member Agali Yahyayev was tortured by police after detention. This was stated by his wife Shahana Hasanova at today's press conference.
According to her, her husband called from the Kurdakhan pre-trial detention centre on 3 September and told about the circumstances of his detention.
"Agali said he was detained at a traffic light in Mehtiabad settlement. Officers of the Anti-Narcotics Department of the Interior Ministry detained him and took him to Mehtiabad police station where they subjected him to horrific torture. He was told that he must confess to a drug-related offence - "this is the instruction from above".
"Very harsh conditions were put in front of him, after which he was forced to confess," his wife said.
This is Yakhyaev's third arrest on criminal charges. He was first arrested for taking part in a religious procession in February 2010 and received a 4.5-year imprisonment.
The second time he was arrested in November 2015 in the Nardaran case and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment. In 2021, Yakhyaev was released on pardon.
In both cases, he was recognised by human rights activists as a political prisoner.
It should be reminded that Yahyaev was detained on 31 August, and on 1 September it became known that he was charged under Article 234.4.3 (drug trafficking on a large scale) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan and a measure of restraint in the form of arrest was chosen by court decision. -30C-

In 2017, the Sumgayit City Court ruled to evict the Aliyev family—refugees from Gubadli (Akper, Sarvinaz, Ramil, and two other family members)—from an illegally occupied apartment in the 12th microdistrict, Building 7A, Apartment 35. The court ordered the property be returned to its rightful owner, Samaya Aliyeva. However, the Ministry of Justice intervened, citing a presidential decree from July 1, 2004, which approved a state program for improving the living and working conditions of refugees. Under this directive, refugees without alternative housing cannot be evicted until they are provided with a replacement residence by the Executive Authority.
