"Recently, some media regularly publish reports about the alleged departure of Ali Insanov's family members abroad, to Germany. These messages are not true. In fact, immediately after the arrest of Ali Insanov, the official structures imposed a ban on the departure of members of his family from the country. All of them live in Baku and do not intend to leave the country," said his lawyer Togrul Babayev on behalf of Insanov.
Ali Insanov was arrested on October 19, 2015 on charges of attempting a coup. However, later this charge was allocated to a separate criminal proceeding and Insanov was sentenced to 11 years in prison on charges of committing economic crimes. Despite the Strasbourg Court's recognition of the violation of Insanov's rights in the course of a second trial, the verdict was upheld to him.
In August 2016, three months before the end of the sentence, 70-year-old Insanov was charged with new charges of illegally storing psychotropic substances in the prison, resisting the guards and keeping the banned items in the colony. After that, Insanov was sentenced to 7 more years of imprisonment. Insanov rejects accusations, and believes that he is being persecuted for criticizing the leadership of Azerbaijan. -03B06-
