Aslan Ismayilov is found guilty
Baku / 01.02.18 / Turan: Lawyer Aslan Ismayilov was brought to trial as a private prosecution and was convicted. Such a decision was made on February 1 by the judge of the Sabail District Court Azer Tagiyev. The suit against Ismayilov was filed by the head of the party "Modern Musavat" Hafiz Hajiyev. He asks the court to bring Ismayilov to justice under Articles 147 (libel) and 148 (insult) of the Criminal Code. On February 1, Ismayilov was taken to court by the police. The lawyer said that he was taken from the office. Despite the fact that dozens of people came to the court to support Ismayilov, they were not allowed into the hall. The police did not allow them to even stand in front of the courthouse.
At the preparatory meeting, the plaintiff stated that Ismayilov had offended the president and his family, officials. In relation to himself, Hajiyev found it insulting that Ismayilov in social networks called him "animate" ("canlı").
The allegation that Hajiyev blackmails others, and gets money from them, the plaintiff called a slander.
Ismayilov stated that the claim was unfounded, and asked the court not to take it into production. However, the judge Tagiyev accepted the case and recognized Ismayilov as the defendant. Hearings on the merits are scheduled for February 7. Ismayilov believes that Hajiyev uses it as a mean to punish Ismayilov for exposing corruption in the National Center of Oncology, selling psychotropic medicines in the pharmacies without a prescription.-03C06-

The closure of Azerbaijan's land borders was discussed during the parliamentary session on November 25. While the government’s decision cites the coronavirus pandemic as the main reason—despite the World Health Organization declaring its end last year—Zahid Oruj, Chair of the Human Rights Committee in the Milli Majlis, pointed to other factors. He stated, "Opening the borders could result in an influx of hundreds of thousands of non-Azerbaijani refugees due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Additionally, in Iran, many are prepared to cross into Azerbaijan to safeguard their lives and assets amid military strikes. Such waves of refugees could lead to humanitarian, social, and cultural clashes that may threaten political stability."
