Azerbaijan buys insufficient amount of vaccines - expert

Baku/18.01.21/Turan: Everything is ready for vaccination in Azerbaijan - special rooms in clinics, and medical institutions are equipped with refrigerators and thermal bags, the Ministry of Health told Turan.

Vaccination is carried out under the supervision of doctors. The citizen is first registered, and then taken to the vaccination room. After vaccination, he is under medical supervision for 30 minutes in case of side effects. If there are not any symptoms, the patient is allowed to go home, - said the representative of the Ministry of Health, adding that before vaccination, it is necessary to undergo an examination by a local doctor.

The State Agency for Compulsory Health Insurance told Turan that vaccines would be delivered to Azerbaijan in stages.

“Two million doses of the vaccine have been bought from China. Another 2 million doses are expected to be purchased within the COVAX platform,” the ministry said.

According to an agreement with the GAVI alliance, it is planned to purchase vaccines to inoculate 10% of the country's population, but it is not yet known what vaccines this organization will provide. Their deliveries are expected in April, the Ministry of Health said.

One of the founders of the Public Association of Doctors Aydin Aliyev told Turan that the Chinese vaccine "CoronaVac" used in Azerbaijan is a high-quality vaccine that has passed all tests. “It has a killed virus in it,” he said. Aliyev noted that there is still no information about long-term trials of vaccines made in Europe. He considers the purchase of 4 million doses insufficient, which will be enough for 2 million people.

The number of polyclinics for vaccination is also insufficient. It is necessary to prepare more medical facilities so that there are no queues and people could comfortably be vaccinated.

In his opinion, the slow pace of vaccination may not give the desired results. “For the first vaccinated immunity is weakened in 4-5 months. If this process is not completed within five months, then the unvaccinated will infect others. The vaccination process should be completed within six months," Aliyev noted. - 2106
