Azerbaijan does not produce or export anti-personnel mines, expert
Baku/16.11.21/Turan: The Hague hosts the annual conference of the countries participating in the UN Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Antipersonnel Mines on November 16-19. The Azerbaijan Mine Action Campaign Public Union reported that the Landmine Monitor report for 2021 was presented at the conference.
According to the report, 80% of the 164 countries in the world have acceded to this convention, adopted in 1997. Thirty-three states, including the South Caucasus countries, have not acceded to the Convention.
According to the latest report, demining operations were carried out in 38 countries and 3 non-state territories.
“For the sixth year in a row, the number of people affected by antipersonnel mines and explosive ordnance has increased. During this period, 7,073 mine casualties were registered. The overwhelming majority of the victims (80%) are civilians, about half of whom are children, ”the document says.
The number of countries that declared their territories completely free of mines was 31. Since the signing of the convention, a total of 55 million mines have been destroyed. Forty-one countries stopped mine production, leaving only 12.
Azerbaijan has reportedly not joined the Mine Ban Treaty. Azerbaijan has officially stated that it supports the goals of the Convention, including a complete ban on landmines, but due to the violation of its territorial integrity, it was unable to join the document.
“Azerbaijan can join the Convention only after signing a peace agreement with Armenia. Nevertheless, since 2005, Azerbaijan has been voting for the resolutions of the UN General Assembly with the aim of universalizing this agreement.
Baku has repeatedly stated that it does not produce or export anti-personnel mines, ”said Hafiz Safikhanov, chairman of the Azerbaijan Mine Action Campaign.
According to official data, in a year after the end of the 44-day Karabakh war, 25 civilians were killed in a mine explosion in Azerbaijan, and another 36 civilians were injured.
In total, since the beginning of the conflict, including 2020, 2,439 people have suffered from the explosive remnants of the war in Azerbaijan, including 383 killed and 2,056 wounded. -03B06-
