Aziz Orujov Not Allowed to Meet with Relatives
Baku / 02.02.18 / Turan: The lawyer of the convicted director of the Internet TV Kanal-13, Javad Javadov, stated about the violation of the rights of his client in the pre-trial detention center.
Despite the expiration of almost two months after the sentence, he is not given open meetings with family members. Orujov can communicate with them only through a glass partition.
According to the lawyer, meetings are allowed through the glass partition during the preliminary and judicial investigation.
Aziz Orujov has already been convicted and now he has the right to meet with family members directly. Restrictions on Orujov's rights are contrary to national legislation and the European Convention on Human Rights, the lawyer said.
Aziz Orujov was arrested in May 2017 on charges of illegal entrepreneurship and abuse of official authority. He did not admit the guilt. Human rights activists recognize him as a political prisoner. On December 15, the court sentenced Aziz Orujov to six years in prison.
The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Arlem Desire, called on the Azerbaijani authorities to review the verdict on Aziz Orujov, the executive director of Kanal-13, on December 18, 2017, and to stop infringements of the freedom and security of all journalists of independent media. -06D-
