Child Mortality in Azerbaijan Worst in Entire Region

In the past 25 years, the infant mortality rate worldwide fell by half. This is stated in a joint study by the World Health Organization and UNICEF.

The report says that 25 years ago the mortality rate of children under five was 12.7 million per year. As expected, this year the figure will be less than 6 million.

In Azerbaijan, compared to 1990, the infant mortality rate declined from 95 to 32 per 1 thousand, but it's still the worst result in the South Caucasus.

On the rating table Azerbaijan occupies the 68 place, while Georgia and Armenia, respectively, are at the 12th and 14th places.

It is expected that Azerbaijan will reach significant improvement in 32 cases of neonatal deaths only in 2030.

The former Soviet Union the situation is worse only in Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

The lowest infant mortality rates are in the countries of Northern and Western Europe - Luxembourg, Iceland, Finland and Norway.

However, the Ministry of Health of Azerbaijan shows statistics different from the international report.

For example, in 2014 the infant mortality rate was 10.2 per 1,000, while in 2009 the figure was 11.3.

The maternal mortality rate in relation to 1,000 live births is 14.5.
