Consideration of the appeal of R.Jafarov is scheduled for July 21
The preliminary hearing on the complaint of a human rights activist Rasul Jafarov was scheduled for 21 July morning in the Baku Appeal Court, according to the lawyer Fariz Namazly. Protection plans to request a partial re-trial investigation, change the measure of restraint, and release Jafarov from custody. The appeal of another human rights defender -Intigama Aliyev was also scheduled for 21 July.
Jafarov was arrested on 2 August, 2014. He was charged under Articles 192 (illegal business), 213 (tax evasion) and 308 (abuse of power) of the Criminal Code.
International human rights organization Amnesty International considers him a "prisoner of conscience". After the announcement of the verdict Jafarov said that it was fabricated and politically motivated. The Court has not yet proved any guilt of the human rights activist. All the prosecution witnesses have testified in favor of the human rights activist and the trial actually proved his complete innocence. In numerous statements and appeals by international organizations, including the Council of Europe, European Union and others. Called on the Azerbaijani authorities to release Jafarov and other human rights defenders who were arrested on trumped up charges. Jafarov himself after his arrest said that he is being persecuted for his constant focus on the problem of political prisoners, for holding a protest during PACE session in Strasbourg, where was Ilham Aliyev, and for calling for a boycott of European Games. -06B—
