Court extended term of arrest of trade union activist Afiyaddin Mammadov for another two months
The Khatai district court today extended for another two months the term of arrest of the head of the independent confederation of trade unions "Working Platform" Afiyaddin Mammadov.
This was reported to Turan by lawyer Zibeyda Sadygova.
Recall that Mammadov was detained on September 20 near his home after being attacked by an unknown person. However, Mammadov was also accused of stabbing him.
On the evening of September 21, the Khatai district court chose in relation to Mammadov's measure of restraint.
Charges have been brought against Mammadov under Article 221.3 (hooliganism committed with the use of a weapon or an object used as a weapon) and 126.1 (intentional infliction of serious harm to health) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan, according to which he faces imprisonment for up to 8 years.
The lawyer noted that over the past two months, with the exception of the initial procedural actions, no investigative measures were carried out with the participation of Mammadov himself.
The investigator motivated the extension of the arrest by the need to conduct "confrontation" with the victim and obtain the results of examinations.
The defense considers the criminal prosecution of Mammadov and, accordingly, the extension of the investigation unjustified.
Sadygov's lawyer noted that Afiyaddin was actually injured.
"The doctor in the pre-trial detention center diagnosed him with a fracture of the nasal septum and noted the need for surgery. However, no action is being taken. I applied to the Penitentiary Service, the medical department of the Ministry of Justice, the leadership of the pre-trial detention center, the Ombudsman, but no measures are being taken," the lawyer noted.
An appeal will be filed against the court's decision, the lawyer said.
The lawyer also pointed to the restriction of Mammadov's rights to phone calls.
He is allowed to call only relatives, while he has the right to call a lawyer and other persons of legitimate interest to him.
The defense intends to appeal against the court's decision to extend the term of Mammadov's arrest.

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
