Court of Appeal Rejects All Petitions by Lawyer for Giyas Ibrahimov

The Baku Court of Appeal chaired by Vugar Mamedov examined the complaint by the youth activist Giyas Ibrahimov. During the hearing, the court did not satisfy any of the 10 defense motions.

In particular, the lawyer Elchin Sadigov petitioned to release Ibrahimov from the glass cage and put him next to the defense, as being within the cell, Ibrahimov could not hear what was going on in the hall.

The lawyer also requested to summon a representative of the Interior Ministry in connection with the violation of the presumption of innocence for Ibrahimov.

Next Sadigov petitioned for the examination of fingerprints on the drugs seized from Ibrahimov and police officers involved in the operation.

According to the lawyer, the examination could reveal the existence of fingerprints of policemen on the drug packages.

The lawyer also requested to change the measure of restraint for Ibrahimov before the entry into force of the court verdict.

In addition, Sadigov petitioned to summon an employee of the Baku Police Department, Shirali Babayev, who without authority appointed the examination of the case.

The lawyer also requested to call other police officers involved in the apprehension of Ibrahimov. However, the judge rejected all the applications.

The lawyer said that in connection with the rejection of all the defense motions the defense will submit an appeal to the Supreme Court. The judge scheduled the next hearing for 29 December.

* Members of the Civil Movement NIDA Giyas Ibrahimov and Bayram Mammadov were detained on 10 May this year, after they painted a monument to Heydar Aliyev with political slogans. However, they were accused of drug trafficking and sentenced to 10 years in prison each.

The organization Amnesty International announced Giyas Ibrahimov and Bayram Mammadov "prisoners of conscience". The organization believes that the charges against the young people of drug-related crimes are falsified.

“The sole purpose was to punish the young people for their political activity,” said Amnesty International. -03 / 16D-
