Court of Appeal Upholds Decision to Move Movsum Samedov to Closed Prison
Today the Baku Court of Appeal today dismissed the appeal of the convicted leader of the Islamic Party (AIP) Movsum Samedov against his transfer to the Gobustan closed prison for 2 years.
The decision to tighten the conditions of Samedov’s imprisonment was motivated with his violating discipline in the jail, and causing damage to state property, which was reflected in the fact that he spread a blanket on for the namaz prayer on the floor in the cell.
According to the defense, the true reason for the punishment of Samedov is the growing number of believers among the prisoners under the influence of the authority of the leader of the Islamic Party.
* Movsum Samedov was arrested on January 7, 2011, five days after the harsh criticism of the Azerbaijani authorities at the Congress of the party.
October 7 Samedov and six activists of IPA and theologians were sentenced to lengthy prison terms on charges of attempting to seize power, illegal possession of weapons and other crimes.
Samedov was sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment. The European Court of Human Rights began to communicate on his case. -16 / 06B--
