Defendants Demand Ali Hasanovs Spouse to Attend Court
Baku / 19.07.19 / Turan: On July 19, the Baku Court of Grave Crimes chaired by Judge Azer Pashayev held a regular court hearing on the case of misappropriation of 564,000 manat in Kaspi LLC.
In this case, the name of the spouse of the Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan on Socio-Political Issues Ali Hasanov, Sona Veliyeva, also appears. She is the founder of the Kaspi Lyceum.
The accused are accountants of Kaspi LLC Tural Mammadov and Farahim Mohbaliyev. They are charged under Art. 179.4 (Embezzlement on Large Scale) of the Criminal Code.
The accused Mohbaliyev requested interrogation of Sona Veliyeva in court as a witness. "Why don't they interrogate the people who pushed me towards this crime?" he wondered. "Everything was on behalf of the leadership. Let Sona Veliyeva be called to court. She received AZN 884,000. I handed the money to her. This is also her testimony to the investigation," said Mohbaliyev.
The defense supported the petition. However, the state prosecutor suggested leaving the petition without consideration.
The court decided to leave the application without consideration and discuss it in upcoming sessions.
Then, at the trial, Sarkhan Bakhshaliyev, head of the Kaspi lyceum security service, was heard as a witness. He said he received a salary in cash and by means of a bank card. The total amount of the salary was 450 manat. On the card he received 260 manat. Bakhshaliyev noted that although he had nothing to do with accounting, he sometimes received payment from the parents for teaching the children and transferred the money to the accused Mammadov.
The next court session will take place on July 26.
According to the indictment, in April-October 2018 for the training of 454 students of the lyceum 1 million 366 thousand manat was paid. AZN 564,000 was not included in the official documentation and was assigned by them.
Based on the appeal of the lyceum director Elnur Aliyev to the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, a criminal case was initiated.
In previous court sessions, the accused Mammadov said he took part of AZN 564,000 for his own needs. -21C--

The closure of Azerbaijan's land borders was discussed during the parliamentary session on November 25. While the government’s decision cites the coronavirus pandemic as the main reason—despite the World Health Organization declaring its end last year—Zahid Oruj, Chair of the Human Rights Committee in the Milli Majlis, pointed to other factors. He stated, "Opening the borders could result in an influx of hundreds of thousands of non-Azerbaijani refugees due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Additionally, in Iran, many are prepared to cross into Azerbaijan to safeguard their lives and assets amid military strikes. Such waves of refugees could lead to humanitarian, social, and cultural clashes that may threaten political stability."
