Detention of Activists of National Movement of Azerbaijan
Baku / 21.05.19 / Turan: The chairman of the organizing committee for the congress of the National Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (NDPA) and Board member of the Popular Movement of Azerbaijan (PMA) Ilyas Abdullayev on May 18 was detained by the police.
Turan was told by the lawyer for Abdullayev, Yavar Huseyn.
"Ilyas Abdullayev was taken to the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GDCOC) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. On May 20, I was there and they told me unofficially that Abdullayev was not in their office. I appealed to the Prosecutor General"s Office and the Ministry of Internal Affairs that they do not allow me to contact my client, which is a violation of the rights of my client and my attorney"s powers," the lawyer said.
On May 21, he is going to GDCOC again to clarify Abdullayev"s fate.
NDPA regards the detention of Abdullayev as repression against its members.
"Along with Ilyas Abdullayev, members of the Sumgait, Garadagh and Sheki district party organizations were detained. These persecutions and detentions are the result of the recent activity of the party," the NDPA statement said.
The chairman of the Future of Azerbaijan party Agasif Shakiroglu, in turn, reported on the arrests of members of his party from May 19.
"Until today, about 20 activists have been detained. Some of them were released, but 10 people are still in custody. One of them is Yavar Mikailov. From the family they reported that he was being held at the Baku Police Headquarters. However, meetings with him are not allowed.
The police can, without a court order, keep a man in custody for only 48 hours. We believe he was given administrative arrest. However, in the Binagadi detention center for administratively arrested persons, we are not provided with any information," said Shakiroglu.
Turan"s attempts to receive comments in the Ministry of Internal Affairs failed.
