ECHR to Announce Two Decisions in Rafig Tagi Case

Baku / 24.11.18 / Turan: In the near future, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) will announce the decision on the case of journalist Rafig Tagi, who died in 2011 in Azerbaijan after an armed attack on him.

This was stated by lawyer Rashid Hajili, who represents Tagi"s family at the ECHR.

In addition to him, the interests of the Tagi family are represented by British lawyers.

As Hajili recalled, despite the initiation of a criminal case on the attack on Tagi and the infliction of heavy knife wounds to him, the crime was not solved.

In 2014, the prosecutor's office suspended criminal proceedings in connection with the "failure to identify a person accused of a crime".

According to Hajili, the ECHR completed the investigation of this case a year ago and in the near future a decision will be announced.

The ECHR will also announce the decision in another case of Tagi.

In 2006, he, along with the chief editor of the Sanat newspaper, Samir Huseynov (Sadagatoglu), were arrested because of the article "Europe and Us", in which they criticized Islam, on charges of inciting religious hatred.

Then they were sentenced respectively to 3 and 4 years in prison. Later both were pardoned.

Recall that on November 19, 2011, Azerbaijani writer and publicist Rafig Tagi was attacked by an unknown person, receiving 6 stab wounds when returning home from work late in the evening. Tagi was operated on, and his condition did not cause any concern of the doctors. However, on November 23, his condition worsened sharply and he died a little later.

Various international organizations, such as Reporters Without Borders, the Committee to Protect Journalists, the OSCE and others condemned the murder of Rafig Tagi, calling on the Azerbaijani authorities to conduct a thorough investigation of the crime and punish all the perpetrators. -06D--
