Elchin Mammad needs inpatient treatment
Baku/07.04.21/Turan: Convicted journalist and human rights activist Elchin Mammad was examined by doctors in jail N14, according to the message of the NGO Legal Education of Youth of Sumgayit, which he heads.
For a whole year, he was kept in a closed cell and during this period, his health worsened. However, the doctors only visually examined the bumps on the arm and legs, ascertained difficulty breathing due to problems in the bronchi. After that, he was prescribed outpatient treatment at the jail's first-aid post, without issuing any documents or giving the diagnosis.
According to the mother of the convict, Rahila Mammadli, her son insists on transferring to a medical institution. “Without an ultrasound examination and various tests, it is impossible to prescribe the correct treatment. He suffers from varicose veins, prostatitis and has difficulty walking. Elchin is coughing badly. In addition, he is a carrier of hepatitis C, which also requires periodic treatment,” said the mother.
The monitoring group of human rights organizations intends to reapply to the Ministry of Justice for the hospitalization of Elchin Mammad. “We are now preparing a letter addressed to the Minister of Justice to transfer Elchin to a medical institution. A person with symptoms of serious illness, hepatitis C, should be treated in a hospital,” Novella Jafaroglu, head of the Women's Rights Society, told Turan.
The public relations department of the Penitentiary Service refrained from commenting on Mammad's condition, citing the lack of information on this issue. The department added that medical personnel are not subordinate to this structure.
Recall that on October 17, 2020, the Sumgayit City Court sentenced Elchin Mammad to 4 years in prison, finding him guilty of “theft” and “illegal possession of weapons”.
The human rights defender was arrested in March 2020. A woman to whom he provided legal assistance complained about him. Prior to that, the said woman also complained about the editor of the website criminal.az Anar Mammadov.
Mammad connects the criminal case with his human rights activities. International organizations Amnesty International, PEN, FİACAT and others condemned the arrest of Mammad. Local human rights activists recognized him as a political prisoner.-06B06-

At 16 meters long, the creature’s seemingly lifeless form and pungent odor left many convinced they were witnessing an ecological tragedy. By that night, however, the mysterious visitor had departed, loaded onto a cargo platform and whisked away to the airport.
