Baku/27.06.22/Turan: Human rights activist and journalist Elchin Mamed, who is kept in colony No 16, went on hunger strike on June 27, the NGO "Legal Education of the Youth of Sumgait", which he heads, told Turan. He demands his release from prison.

"In protest against the injustice, he renounces the Azerbaijani citizenship and asks for asylum in one of the countries of the European Union," a press release of the said NGO said.

Mamed motivates his steps by the fact that he has exhausted the possibility of achieving justice in Azerbaijan and no longer believes that the Azerbaijani courts can make a legitimate decision.

On July 13, the Supreme Court will consider his appeal against the refusal to release him on parole upon serving 1/3 of his sentence.

On July 1, the court of first instance will hold a hearing on his new request for parole upon serving half of his sentence. However, the Penitentiary Service Commission has already given a negative opinion on the mitigation of his sentence.

Elchin Mamed believes that his appeal will be rejected again after a formal hearing. Elchin does bot believe in the justice of the Supreme Court.

* On 17 October 2020. The Sumgayit City Court sentenced the head of the NGO "Legal Education of Sumgayit Youth" and editor of the website "Yukselish Namine" Elchin Mamed to 4 years of imprisonment, finding him guilty of "theft" and "illegal possession of ammunition and weapons".

International organizations, including "Amnesty International", PEN, FİACAT and others, condemned Mamed's arrest. Local human rights activists recognized him as a political prisoner. -06B-
