Elmar Veliyev is not up to testify in court
Baku / 08.07.21 / Turan: The trial of the "Ganja case" will continue on July 15. According to lawyer Javad Javadov, results of the forensic medical examination of the former head of Ganja, Elmar Veliyev, a victim in the case, have become known.
"As a result of the attempt, Veliyev had mental disorders, and he cannot be questioned in court due to possible deterioration of his health," Javadov said.
It should be added that a medical examination was scheduled on May 25 to clarify the sanity of the former head of Ganja. The judge made such a decision after he satisfied the petition of the lawyer of one of the accused, Javar Zalov.
The lawyer noted that despite the granting Veliyev the status of crime victim, he had not thoroughly interrogated. Subsequently, under the pretext of health problems, he was not interrogated.
Other lawyers and the accused supported the motion, and the prosecutor did not object. For this reason, the process was postponed until the announcement of the results of the examination.
*It should be reminded that on July 3, 2018, an attempted murder was made on the then head of the executive power of the city of Ganja, Elmar Veliyev. A resident of Ganja, Yunis Safarov, wounded him and his bodyguard.
After that, a protest rally was scheduled for July 10 in front of the Ganja administration building. On the same day, riots occurred in the city, during which two policemen were killed. This was followed by mass arrests of believers and others.
Pursuant to these events, a criminal case was opened against 70 people. The accused were sentenced from 6 to 18 years of imprisonment. About 10 people were conditionally released.
Note that the trial of Yunis Safarov and 11 others began in January 2020.-16B06-
