Fazil Gasimov Claims Death Threats
Fazil Gasimov, an Azerbaijani economist accused of counterfeiting money alongside prominent scholar Gubad Ibadoglu, has alleged that another defendant in the case, Anar Aliyev, threatened to kill him if he did not dismiss his legal team.
"Fazil told me that on January 24, as he was leaving the Serious Crimes Court building, Anar Aliyev demanded that he fire his lawyers. Otherwise, he threatened to kill Fazil. 'It will either be me or someone else,' Anar told Fazil," Turan news agency quoted Gasimov's brother, Nizami Gasimov, as saying.
Gasimov is represented by lawyers Fuad Agaev and Telman Gasimov. His case was separated from the criminal proceedings against Ibadoglu, who was arrested in July 2023 on charges of producing, acquiring, or distributing counterfeit money as part of an organized group. The charges, brought under Article 204.3.1 of Azerbaijan's Criminal Code, carry a maximum penalty of 12 years in prison. In August, authorities added charges of religious extremism against Ibadoglu. Following international pressure, his pretrial detention was replaced with house arrest.
Gasimov was detained in Turkey in August 2023 and extradited to Azerbaijan, where he was charged with counterfeiting money. He has denied the charges, claiming that the case is retaliation for his reports on corruption in Azerbaijan, co-authored with Ibadoglu.
Anar Aliyev, identified as an accomplice, has persistently testified against Gasimov and Ibadoglu. Investigators previously stated that Aliyev's testimony served as the basis for Ibadoglu’s arrest.
International organizations and academic circles have condemned the case as politically motivated and fabricated, calling for the charges to be dropped and for the accused to be released.
