Azerbaijan has reported its first case of monkeypox infection. The infected individual is a young man who recently traveled abroad. The Ministry of Health and TƏBİB (the Unified Management of Territorial Medical Units) issued a joint press release on January 18 regarding the detection of the monkeypox virus in Azerbaijan.
According to the information, a 22-year-old Azerbaijani citizen was abroad on a tourist trip from January 2 to 11. A few days after his return, he visited a clinic in Baku, complaining of "weakness, fever, a vesicular rash in the genital area, swollen lymph nodes, and muscle pain."
An infectious disease specialist, suspecting monkeypox, discovered during the medical history inquiry that the patient had come into contact with a person who had a rash during his trip. The results of the laboratory tests, and the PCR results confirmed the presence of the monkeypox virus. The patient has been hospitalized and is receiving treatment in a medical facility.
At the same time, no symptoms of illness have been observed in the family members who came into contact with the patient. They are under home medical observation. "They have been prescribed preventive treatment and provided with the necessary medications. Medical and preventive measures for the patient and his contacts will continue until the end of the incubation period," the joint press release from the Ministry of Health and TƏBİB concludes.
