Former Chef of International Bank of Azerbaijan is banned meeting with relatives
Baku/04.10.17/Turan: The former head of the International Bank of Azerbaijan (IBA) Jahangir Hajiyev was released on Wednesday afternoon from the punishment cell, where he was imprisoned a week ago. However, he complained of severe unbearable pain in the pancreas, which was the result of a hunger strike. Turan was informed about this by his sister Amina Hajiyeva. The former banker also said that, despite requests to call him "ambulance" or other doctors, his appeals are ignored. According to A.Hajiyeva, her brother is not given even anesthetics. The prosecutor's office also banned him from meeting with his sister and other relatives, motivating the need to "preserve the secrets of the investigation."
"I spent two years attending meetings with my brother in jail, and the investigation was completed, he was convicted, and kept in the jail, now the meetings are forbidden," said Hajiyeva, expressing grave concern about her brother's state of health. "Jahangir"s health causes serious concern. He barely got to the phone, and here they also forbid us to meet," she added.
Lawyer Fakhraddin Mehdiyev was again unable to meet with Hajiyev today. The defender was told by again that the lawyer's room was occupied. Over the past week, after Hajiyev was put in a punishment cell, the defenders never met with him. The lawyer regarded this as "a gross violation of the right to defense."
He also called illegal the ban on Hajiyev's meetings with his relatives. Mehdiyev explained that Hajiyev was convicted, and the investigation continues on other episodes and the restriction of the right to visits with relatives is illegal.
The lawyer had earlier filed a complaint with the Penitentiary Service in connection with the non-admission of the defenders to Hajiyev. He was promised on Thursday to provide explanations. Representatives of the Penitentiary Service were not available for comment. In 2015, the IBA revealed major financial irregularities and capital outflows abroad. The former head of the IBA, Jahangir Hajiyev, was sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment, but pleaded not guilty and stated that all major loans were allocated with the consent of the supervisory board. Along with him, former heads of several IBA affiliates were sentenced to imprisonment. -06B-
