Former MP Candidates Refused to Deal with Government in European Court
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on Thursday decided to meet grievances of 14 applicants from Azerbaijan for violation of their rights during the parliamentary elections in 2010. They were all candidates and their statements complained of violation of Article 3 (right to free elections) of Protocol No. 1 of the European Convention on Human Rights against them. Turan was told by the lawyer Asabali Mustafayev. According to him, the court found a violation of the rights of Khalid Bagirov, Tural Abbasli, Yegana Hajiyeva, Alaif Hasanov, Khayyam Mammadov, Ali Gasimli, Tazakhan Miralamli, Parviz Hashimli, Natig Jafarov, Eyyub Umidov, Vugar Aliyev, Mohubbat Jabbarov, Vahid Jafarov and Razi Abbasov. ECHR decided to pay them compensation totaling $ 135 thousand Euros.
Mustafayev represented the interests of two of the applicants. According to him, the ECHR took a common decision on 14 cases due to the delay in the timing of the verdict.
The lawyer Khalid Bagirov, in addition to winning his personal case at the ECHR, represented four of the applicants in the Strasbourg court.
Bagirov told Turan the Government of Azerbaijan invited the applicants to an amicable agreement.
“First, the government agreed to pay the compensation, but refused to recognize the violation of our rights. Further, the government agreed to pay the compensation and recognize the violation of our rights just to get the statement from the ECHR review. However the applicants disagreed. Now, after the decision of the ECHR, the Committee of Ministers will oversee its implementation. -06B--
