French edition of "Sumgait: the Beginning of the Collapse of the USSR" was presented
Baku/31.03.23/Turan: A literary round table was held in Paris the day before, organized by Aslan Ismailov, who came to the French capital to present his book "Sumgait: the Beginning of the Collapse of the USSR".
For this purpose, the "France-Azerbaijan Dialogue Association" organized a round table, which was attended by French and international journalists, business leaders, heads of associations and representatives of the intelligentsia.
At the Sumgait trial, the indictment contained 400 pages. The daily reading of the volumes "was frightening." All points of view of the investigation converged on the USSR as the "sponsor of this massacre." Azerbaijanis and Armenians have become "collateral victims of this Russian manipulation."
The author draws a parallel with what was happening in Crimea in 2008 and in Donbass at the present time, "this is a process similar to what happened in Sumgait, because the Russian policy aims to divide in the name of domination."
Recall that the mass riots took place in Sumgait on February 27-29, 1988. At that time, these events became an important trump card in the hands of Armenia, which claimed a part of the territory of Azerbaijan - Karabakh.
The book of the famous Azerbaijani lawyer Aslan Ismailov was published in 2010. Ismailov was the prosecutor for the defense of the state prosecution in the criminal case of the Sumgait events.
Ismailov stated that the Sumgait events caused a clash of various interests of geopolitical and regional nature, the crisis of the Soviet system and the ambitions of Armenian nationalist circles.
To his thinking, at that time Armenian nationalist circles tried to prove that the life was incompatible with Azerbaijanis, and they provoked events in 1987, the deportation of Azerbaijanis from Armenia and an open struggle for the separation of Karabakh from Azerbaijan began.
The first provocation with the aim of Armenian pogroms was planned in Nakhchivan, the second in Ganja. In both cases, local authorities were able to prevent provocations.
The former prosecutor recalls that the case on Sumgait was conducted by Moscow, Belarusian investigative groups, as well as Armenian investigative bodies. And it was proved that the Armenian Eduard Grigoryan led the pogroms. However, the investigation was still carried out with a sweep of important facts. As a result, everything was reduced to the fact that the event was organized by hooligan elements.
The indictment stated 32 killed - 26 Armenians and 6 Azerbaijanis defending Armenians, and not thousands, as the Western press wrote.
Subsequently, the flywheel of violence gained momentum, which led to the displacement of more than a million people on both sides, the occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia and the long-standing hostility that still continues.-0-
