Guillermo Cano Prize to Be Handed to Khadija Ismayilova’s Mother
The imprisoned journalist Khadija Ismayilova has been awarded the UNESCO Guillermo Cano Prize. The presentation is scheduled for the World Free Press Day on May 3.
On the eve of the ceremony the journalist’s mother Elmira Ismayilova met with the former Finnish President Tarja Halonen and Secretary General of UNESCO Irina Bokova in Helsinki.
The award was established in honor of the Colombian journalist Guillermo Cano, who was killed opposite the office of El Espectador in Bogota on December 17, 1986. The monetary portion of the award amounts to 25,000 USD.
Journalists and human rights activists carried out actions under the slogan #FreeKhadija on the World Free Press Day.
Ismayilova was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison on charges of economic crimes. However, the true reason is her exposing corruption in the highest echelons of power in Azerbaijan.
Amnesty International admits her as a prisoner of conscience. -16B-
