Head of "Demokratik.az" website in jail stops hunger strike
Baku/04.08.23/Turan: Head of "Demokratik.az" website Osman Narimanoglu (Rzayev) held in Ganja pre-trial detention centre stopped hunger strike on 4 August, which he had been on for 12 days. The journalist's wife Arzu Rzayev informed Turan about it.
"After our persistent requests, Osman today, on the 12th day stopped his hunger strike.
He will continue to fight for termination of criminal prosecution in legal terms.
Unfortunately, for 12 days no one from the Ombudsman's office and the Prosecutor General's department took interest in his demands," Rzayeva said.
As a result of the hunger strike, Osmanoglu's health deteriorated, blood pressure dropped, stomach pains and dizziness increased, she said.
She noted that on 3 August at the next court session on Osmanoglu's case in Ganja court on grave crimes he could hardly hold on. Due to the leave of one of the judges, the trial was postponed until 7 September.
* Osman Narimanoglu, who has been imprisoned since 5 July 2022, said he fell victim to a smear campaign launched against him by officials of Goygol region.
He was charged under Article 182.2.2 (extortion by threats) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. The complaint against him was filed by Goygol hospital director Vasif Aliyev, former head of the district irrigation systems department Ilgar Magerramov and two other medics. -03В06-

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
