Human Rights Activist Elchin Mammad's Health Worsened
Baku/28.03.21/Turan: The health of the human rights defender Elchin Mammad, who is in prison, has deteriorated. This was reported by the Society for Legal Education of the Youth of Sumgayit, which is headed by Mammad.
After the decision of the Court of Appeal, which confirmed the verdict on the conviction of Mammad to 4 years in prison on charges of theft, he was transferred to prison number 14.
Mammad has health problems, his legs are swollen, and it is difficult for him to walk. In addition, Mammad is sick with hepatitis C.
His detention for already a year has had a negative impact on his health.
Mammad connects his arrest with human rights activities and does not plead guilty to a false criminal case, the press release says.
He also applied to the European Court of Human Rights with an application for the restoration of violated rights.
On October 17, 2020, the Sumgayit City Court sentenced Mammad to 4 years in prison, finding him guilty of "theft" and "illegal possession of weapons."
The human rights defender was arrested in March 2020. A woman to whom he provided legal assistance complained about him. Prior to that, the said woman also complained about the editor of the website criminal.az Anar Mammadov.
Mammad connects the criminal case against him with his human rights activities.
He believes that his prosecution on trumped-up charges contradicts President Ilham Aliyev's anti-corruption policy and his initiatives to reform the judicial system.
The international organizations Amnesty International, PEN, FIACAT and others condemned the arrest of Mammad.
Local human rights activists recognize him as a political prisoner. —06B06-
