Ilkin Rustamzadeh Called Republican of the Year
Baku / 05/29/17 / Turan: The imprisoned blogger Ilkin Rustamzadeh was awarded the Republican of the Year award established by the D18 Movement. This was announced at the May 27 event of the Movement.
More than four years of imprisonment did not cause the blogger to turn his back on the idea of fighting for democracy. The award was given to Rustamzadeh"s mother.
The event was attended by fellow bloggers, representatives of political parties and civil society.
Earlier this prize was awarded to Seymour Hazi, a journalist under arrest, as well as former political prisoner, President of the Society for Legal Education Intigam Aliyev.
The Republican of the Year award was established 3 years ago by the Movement D18. It is annually awarded on the eve of May 28 - Republic Day.
Ilkin Rustamzadeh is one of the eight arrested members of the Civil Movement NIDA, who were accused of organizing riots and the possession of weapons and drugs, and were all sentenced for long periods.
However, the true reason for their arrest is participation on March 10, 2013 in a protest against the soldiers' deaths, held in the center of Baku. Then the Court for Serious Crimes sentenced Zaur Gurbanov, Rashadat Akhundov and Ilkin Rustamzadeh to 8 years of imprisonment, Rashad Hasanov and Mammad Azizov - to 7 and a half years, Bakhtiyar Guliyev, Uzeir Mammadli and Shahin Novruzlu - to 6 years of imprisonment.
Amnesty International has recognized them as prisoners of conscience. Subsequently, all but Ilkin Rustamzadeh were amnestied or pardoned. -0--
