IMD Condemns Torture in Ganja Police over Yunis Safarov
Baku / 06.07.18 / Turan: The Institute of Peace and Democracy (IPD) made a statement in connection with information about torture against Yunis Safarov in the main police department of Ganja City.
Safarov is accused of attempting to assassinate the Mayor of Ganja City. The IPD emphasizes that Safarov was deprived of the opportunity to use the services of a lawyer, and there was no trial to select a preventive measure for Safarov. "Torture against Yunis Safarov makes his death quite possible under torture, which is very typical for "justice" in Azerbaijan," the IPD statement said.
"International human rights organizations, PACE deputies, the European Parliament, politicians and diplomats of Europe and the United States, and media representatives are shocked by the photos of bloodied Yunis Safarov," the IPD director Leila Yunus said.
The IPD expresses hope that the international community will finally call to account the Azerbaijani authorities for violation of human rights. -06D-
