Internet Speed in Azerbaijan 3.5 Times Lower Than World Average

Baku / 08/06/19 / Turan: Azerbaijan ranks 142nd among 208 countries of the world in terms of Internet speed, multimedia technology expert Osman Gunduz said.

According to him, the authoritative research organization Cable (cable.co.uk) published the rating of the countries of the world in terms of Internet speed.

Azerbaijan was next to a number of countries in Africa and Central Asia.

"Cable, within 12 months (until May 2019), having analyzed materials collected based on the results of millions of tests, unveiled a rating of 208 countries.

While in 2018, Azerbaijan was in the 135th place, and in 2017, in the 102nd place, this time it turned out to be 142nd. This means that Azerbaijan in terms of Internet speed over the past year dropped by 7 steps, and over two years - by 33. In 2019, the average speed of the Internet around the world amounted to 11 mb / s. In Azerbaijan, the Internet speed is 3.5 times less than the world average - 3.1 mb / s.

Gunduz does not question the reliability of the research data, since the organization that compiled it is authoritative and is based on data from serious partners.

The expert believes that the results of the study were quite expected.

In his view, the deterioration of Azerbaijan"s indicators is connected with the erroneous policy of the Ministry of Communications and High Technologies over the past two years. For the department has undertaken the entire burden of broadband Internet and does not even deny it.

"The Ministry says it will do everything on its own. Therefore, it tightly blocked all communication sockets and does not allow any private company into the cable-channel system. The Ministry, being a subject of natural monopoly, performs both commercial and regulatory functions. The Ministry abusing commercial powers has gained complete dominance over the Internet market," Gunduz said.

According to him, the share of the state in this sector has grown excessively.

After the cellular operator Azercell became state-owned, the Ministry became interested in creating more superior conditions for the company on the mobile Internet market.

According to Gunduz, instead of creating a new infrastructure, state providers that intercepted 50% of the Internet market are engaged in "intercepting" the clients of private providers at night.

The expert believes that the situation could be much better if private providers were allowed to access the cable-channel system, non-state operators were created favorable conditions, and a good infrastructure was created in the regions. -0-
