Khadija Ismails Complaint to Be Considered on September 20
Baku / 09/13/19 / Turan: A preliminary hearing was held in the Baku Court of Appeal on the complaint of investigative journalist Khadija Ismail.
She filed for a decision of the Binagadi district court of August 9 this year, which rejected the journalist"s request to withdraw her probation.
The journalist asks the Court of Appeal to reverse the decision and release her from the probationary period.
According to Ismail, the consideration of the complaint on the merits is scheduled for September 20.
Known for journalistic investigations into corruption, Ismail was arrested in December 2014 and subsequently sentenced to 7.5 years in prison on charges of economic crimes. In May 2016, the Supreme Court replaced it with a real term of 3.5 years probation, with a trial period of five years. In August 2016, the Baku Court of Appeal reduced the suspended sentence to 2 years and 3 months, leaving the trial period unchanged.
As Ismail previously wrote on her Facebook page, her sentence has expired. Moreover, most of the five-year probationary period, which starts from November 25, 2015, has expired. With all this in mind, she insists on ending the probationary period and removing her criminal record.
The probationary period obliges Ismail to be registered every month in the Execution and Probation Department of the Binagadi district and prohibits her from traveling abroad. -05D06-
